The history of House Mallister

As penned by Maester Harlen of House Mallister, in private communication with Archmaester Garizon of Oldtown.

The birth of House Mallister [ca AL -8000]

House Mallister is one of the most ancient houses in the history of Westeros, on par with the great houses themselves. There is some discussion among Maesters specialized in heraldry on whether house Mallister was established before or after house Tully. As most know, the accounts of the Age of Heroes is shrouded in mystery, as the First Men only set their history down in runes on stones. And yet, we can say with some certainty that House Mallister's founder, Halmon Mallister, was a hero during the Long Night. It is said he played a role of some import during the Battle for the Dawn itself. Of course, many believe the battle to be but a colorful fantasy. Indeed, Archmaester Perestan himself scoffs at the idea of the Prince That Was Promised and Azor Ahai, and by extension, the battle itself.

However it may be, after extensive research I am fairly certain that the House's founder is indeed Halmon Mallister, as has been claimed by the family throughout the ages. Steeped in the mystery of the Age of Heroes, the house has a reputation for courage and bravery based in part on the myths of their founder, but also on more recent events. Lord Jason himself certainly embodies these traits, as proven by his actions during Robert's Rebellion.

Halmon Mallister was said to be a giant of a man with long fair hair and blazing steel blue eyes (possibly indicating blood from the Andals, which is of course preposterous - they were not seen on Westeros until thousands of years later), wielding a monstrous two-handed sword in one hand. Legends of the house claims he helped turned the tide of the battle by aiding the Last Hero himself in defeating the leader of the forces of the Others, sending him back to his icy hell.

There is, of course, no way to verify these tales, as is the case with most legends of old. But there you have it, the beginnings of House Mallister.

The Iron War [ca AL -4000]

For such is it described by the Mallisters - the ancient conflict between the house and the Iron Islands. The next confirmed entry describing the House occurred much, much later, during the Andal Invasion. The house was an established force in the lands around Ironman's Bay and their rule was fair. Lord Wendros Mallister was not aware that the ironborn had established themselves out on their cold and forlorn islands. As such, it came as quite the surprise when the lands were raided time and time again by these savage sea folk. Seagard never fell, but much of the lands surrounding it came under the rule of the ironborn. It would be the last time the Mallisters were unaware of the Iron Islanders - but merely the start of a conflict that has lasted thousands of years.
